Long time reader Drawrof left a comment back on the topic of Effectively Using Magic and Range in Runescape, talking about getting the best Magic equipment possible whether you’re a Member or a Free to Play player:

Just thought I would remind all that if you plan to mage to dress the part.

For Mage in f2p, make sure you get yourself a blue wizard’s hat(+2 magic att & Def) and robe(+3 magic att & Def), and get a ammy of magic (+10 magic att). Wear a anti-dragon shield, or nothing. (regular shield lowers your magic attack) Since you have no option for magic stat boosting bottoms, try the Monk’s robes bottoms or buy a blue skirt. Lastly, use a Staff of what ever elemental type you want, they add 10 magic to attack.

Membership benefits becomes clear when it comes to maging. Full Mystic Robes, Split Bark Armour and the Infinity Line. From the lowly Zammy Robes (at least they give bottom bonus)to lofty God Capes, Ammy of Glory and the Full Ahrim’s Barrows set (+73 magic att&def) Plus dozens of new spells and runes to choose from.

Great tips, thanks for the details Drawrof!

Runescape is a very popular online game, and as a result, you may find yourself competing with others both in your battling areas and while you gather raw materials like logs and ores.

Simple strategies to lessen the frustration you’ll feel from this competition are as follows:

  • Become a Member if at all possible - the accessable part of the world is larger and thus there are places to gather your raw materials and build your skills.
  • Find a bank far away from the main cities and gather your materials from that location instead. Many players are too lazy to leave the main cities, so the competition is inherently reduced.
  • Find a time of the day when there are reliably less people playing, and spend that time gathering materials that are the most frustrating with other players around: mining, log gathering and fishing for example.
  • Invest the time in improving your ranging ability (bow and arrow use), because when you’re fighting in competitive areas, quick-clicking rangers have an advantage, and in some areas a ranger can stand out of the reach of a large monster, yet still attack and kill that monster.
  • Make your own arrows - this goes with the above point - if you try to buy enough arrows to improve your ranging ability, you’ll spend all of your money and still not have enough arrows. It’s better to advance your mining, smelting and fletching skills so you can create and use your own arrows. Plus, hey, if you have an extra 1000 laying around after all that work, you can sell it for a profit to others who are too lazy to create their own!
  • Explore the wilderness when the game server isn’t full - there are a lot of great skilling places, like mines and herblore-component things, in the Wilderness. But of course, there are inherent dangers in the Wilderness - other players looking to kill you for sport or for your equipment. Explore when the game server is quiet and you’ll be a lot less stressed.
  • Save every rune you come across - then build your mage skills periodically. Building your mage skills is rewarded by the teleport skills you will get at mid-to-high levels, which make transportation around the world a LOT EASIER, and provides for quick-escape within certain parts of the Wilderness in case you find yourself under attack.
  • Sell law runes 1, 2 or 5 at a time when players are specifically desperate for the runes - don’t sell large quantities at any one time as you won’t get a good rate for them, and law runes are valuable (being a key part of the mage teleports above). If you sell 1, 2 or 5 at a time, you can ask 1000 coins for each and players will pay. Watch for their advertisements in the bank.

I hope this helps!

Gaining incredible weath doesn’t take much effort on Runescape, but it does take a little bit of common sense. Here are the basic keys to attaining wealth in Runescape:

Selling raw materials gathered by skill building

For example, regular logs, the kind you can chop down with level 1 woodchopping experience, can be sold to other players for 25-100 gold per log! Tin and copper, which can be mined at very low mining levels, can be sold for 25-50 gold per ore. Even feathers can be sold for 2-5 gold per feather!

Killing Isn’t Everything

I’m continually surprised by the high level players who ask me for FREE food or equipment. They’ve obviously played their character very lop-sidedly and cannot support themselves, or are simply too lazy to do so. Realize that there really IS no goal to this game, and take your time advancing player levels by advancing skill levels in between so you can support yourself.

Fish Are Good Food

I personally found fishing to be a lot of fun, and very rewarding in terms of advancements if I combined it with cooking and firemaking by cooking my fish on the shore immediately after filling my inventory. Use your own fish for healing when you go out exploring and fighting, and as your fishing skills improve, you will be able to sell more of the fish, etc, on the market to other players and make good money in the process. Lobsters are especially sought after, far and wide.

Put In The Effort Now, Reap The Rewards Later

Mining is a very lucrative skill to spend time working on. Not only can you sell the ores to other players by advertising at the banks, but you can use the ores yourself to create metal bars and eventually metal armor and weaponry. And while bronze armors and weapons don’t sell well at the stores or with other players, mithril and adamantite sure do!

Sell Bulk To Players, But Sell Slowly To Shops

The shops in Runescape are all set to pay LESS for things they already have in stock, so the more you sell one thing to one shop, the less you get for each item. You’re better to “world-hop” - switch servers you’re logged into when you’re doing your sell runs - sell 5-10 of each armor/weapon in each world, and you’ll get a lot more cash for your efforts.

Players, on the other hand, tend to like to buy in bulk. Be sure you have 100 or more ores, logs or bones before you expect to sell anything.

Get A Job - Updated September 2007

I have developed a simple website that is designed to hook up buyers and sellers - workers and employers on Runescape.  Listing is free and you’re welcome to browse the listings that already exist to find people to buy from or sell to.

If you are interested in getting a job, register and leave a post on the Runescape Pals and Job Board. If you’re looking to hire someone for a job, check out that page as well!
